Presentation on the OR of the future by Joris

What will the OR of the future look like? That was the subject of the workshop 'OR of the Future' which took place in the UMCG (University Medical Centre of Groningen) in the autumn of 2010. For a period of two weeks seven teams, consisting of designers and OK professionals studied new concepts for the OR. Joris' team concentrated on infection prevention. On June 24 he presented the results of his group in the form of a pecha-kucha.

Congress Patient Safety

Céline attended the Annual Congress of IGZ (the Dutch Health Care inspectorate). This year's subject was Patient Safety in Training and Education: quality conditions. As Céline is involved in developing e-learn modules, it was an exciting subject for her!

In the June edition a comprehensive section was dedicated to the simulation of specific 'mock-up'-spaces during the design process. In an article Jan Senhorst of the Erasmus MC and Panton laid down their coordinated findings on mock-ups.
Iris now Master Design Management

Panton builds a pirates' island on the Day of Outdoor Play

The NGSK (the Dutch foundation for disabled children) commissioned Panton to think up a game for the Day of Outdoor Play for children with and without a handicap. We thought up a treasure island and pirates. Sturdy pirates have usually gone through many adventures and may have acquired a handicap in the process, such as a wooden leg, a hook or an eye patch. This way, children without a handicap could experience the challenge of a handicap. The children had to work together to be able to find and capture the treasure.

Mario's outing with the Playground Gang

Mario joined the Playground Gang as a cameraman and accompanied them to the playground at Reyersoord. The camera crew of a Dutch TV-programme put him in front of the camera, see the broadcast from 5.50 onwards.
Panton hands over leadership of Playground Gang to Ilse van der Put

After having completed several enjoyable playground tests, Ingeborg handed over her role as leader to the new Gang leader Ilse van der Put. Thus Ingeborg will have more time to think up fresh innovations for the Inspiration Project 'Playing Together' of NSGK. Panton will design a new website for the project and continue with the design of a play apparatus for both handicapped and non-handicapped children.

Inaugural Symposium VVCZ

On March 24, the inaugural symposium of VVCZ (Vereniging voor Curatieve Zorg Nederland , Society for Curative care in the Netherlands) took place. Members of the Board of Directors, strategic-tactical managers, chairpersons of the medical staff and members of hospital management teams in the Netherlands participated. The society shares knowledge and experience on the improvement of safety in general and the implementation of the TOP reporting of IGZ in particular. Iris gave a presentation on the contribution of design management to safety in hospitals.

During a final meeting of the RAAK-project the website, www.55plustoolbox.nl, was launched. The website contains information, tools and cases to help companies to develop products for people over 55 years old. OR of the future

During a fortnight designers, architects, hospital hygienists and surgeons worked together at a design for the OR of the future. Joris participated in the workshop. His group was challenged to design a patient-friendly and clean OR. The results of this workshop will be published shortly.
The OR of the future is an initiative of the University Medical Centre Groningen and is organised together with architecture centre GRAS and the Centre 'Zorg en Bouw'.

Arion is going to take into production Panton's design of an anaesthesia tray. Anaesthesia syringes and their companion ampoules are neatly arranged and the necessary medication is double-checked as part of the routine.

Introduction Erasmus MC Instrument Van

On Friday, June 24th the Erasmus MC Instrument Van was introduced. This van will travel the entire Netherlands in order to measure how children suffering from Down's syndrome, react to certain stimuli. The introduction was announced on nu.nl. Panton did the refurbishment of the van and the exterior and interior design.

In the next few months Panton will start a new project with the Playground Gang, commissioned by the NSGK. A group of handicapped and non-handicapped children will test playgrounds all over the Netherlands on their accessibility. On June 19th the a href="http://www.rtvnh.nl/player.php?stream=ItemTV&item=54866" target="_blank">first test took place in Amsterdam, which was broadcast by the local radio- and television station of North-Holland (RTV-Noord-Holland).

Ingeborg and Joris were invited to partake in a Design Class at the Support Fair in Utrecht, where visitors had the opportunity to introduce whatever problem they were grappling with. By means of streamlining, focusing and brainstorming they tried to help visitors in defining their problems in order to find a solution.
'Care does it' matchmaking event

At the 'care does it' matchmaking event Panton presented an inventory of bottlenecks we found in nursing and convalescent homes. At his event, organized by Health Valley, representatives of businesses and nursing homes discussed possible solutions.
Panton's fifth anniversary!

On May 20th Panton celebrated its fifth anniversary. On Thursday we received all our business relations. In the afternoon there were first three lectures in the Bouwkunde theatre (situated round the corner of our office) by Ingeborg, Iris and professor Goossens. Afterwards our guests were allowed a closer look at Panton's projects of the past five years at Noordenbergstraat 6 itself. On Saturday, May 22nd we received our relatives and friends. They were given a lecture as well, received an edible plan of the building and were also shown round the projects.

Once a month, on a Wednesday afternoon, Zabuki is organized for Deventer schoolchildren. In Zabuki-training primary school children learn about science and technology by means of experiments which they are allowed to perform themselves. On April 14th the subject was 'industrial design'; therefore Iris made a presentation for 70 children!

Commissioned by Berenschot Panton made an animation about the five care models of the future in 2018, as envisaged by Berenschot. Until recently this animation was only shown during presentations and a congress. Now the animation - which lasts 8 minutes- is having its premiere on the internet!

Koen and Thomas, two of our graduate students, graduated most successfully with their final project "Game for All". Under Panton's supervision they designed a play equipment which appeals especially to children who are physically challenged.

Guided tour in our historic office building

The Hendrick de Keyser Society (which aims at the preservation of valuable historical buildings) organized an excursion to Deventer for its members on April 17, 2009. Over a hundred people attended the guided tour in our listed 'Rijksmonument'. The unique constructional elements in the attic, dating from 1634, were the main attraction.

Mock-up Tests

Three units of the Sophia Children's Hospital in Rotterdam asked Iris to translate working routines and wishes into input for the architect of the new part of the building. Iris worked with them in their daily routine, mapped the target groups and the programme of requirements and organized visually and spatially orientated user's tests by means of Mock-up set-ups in a marquee on the premises of the Erasmus medical Centre.

The Thoracic Intensive Care Unit of the Erasmus Medical Centre asked Panton to assist in the preparations for its imminent moving into another building. The questions were: does the new building require a different way of working and are adaptations necessary in the new building. Together with the team Panton devised some clever tips.

Workshop Medical Appliances

Addie Bouwman and Ingeborg gave a workshop Medical Appliances to Master pharmacy students. By means of cliff-hanger anecdotes and an ingenious approach the pair knew how to keep the students' attention. Central issue of this workshop was the prevention of problems with medical appliances after having been supplied by the pharmacy.
Second Round Medidee

The Technical University Delft, LNAG and Panton, together with marketing and sales expert Mathieu van Lent are continuing successfully with Medidee. The 2nd and 3rd pilots have started without any to-do: two excellent Master students (Karlijn Knol and Celine Joosten) coached by Medidee, will try and solve a bottleneck situation in a hospital. In the second quarter of this year Medidee will be introduced in a festive way and then its results will be shown also. Desmond Tutu watches film made by Panton

Panton made a film commissioned by Marceline of Furth of the VUmc Free University medical centre (VUmc). The film deals is about a project called KIDS. Aim of this project in South Africa is to treat children suffering from Tubercular Meningitis at home instead of sending them to hospital for six months, far away from their parents. Panton was very happy to do this project. The short film explains the project and was shown to a thousand (!) guests, among whom the guest of honour, Bishop Desmond Tutu!

The Central Sterilization Associations organized a congress in order to improve cleaning and sterilization of minimally invasive medical equipment. Ingeborg was one of the speakers at this congress. She showed how and when designers can cooperate with the CSA.
BBraun Future of Sutures

The SutureAid forceps have won a place in the finals of the international competition by BBraun; they were elected the best entry from the Netherlands. On December 4th the best international entry will be announced. Please read more about the competition on BBraun's website. Winner Design Award!

The SutureAid forceps have been elected first in the Category of professional products! The jury confirmed that a seemingly simple problem may sometimes be very complicated indeed to solve. The clever aspect of the design - according to the jury - is, that in working with SutureAid, surgeons do not lose anything of their long experience in suturing, as Suture Aid can almost be used as ordinary forceps. The teams of SutureAid, studioMOM and Panton proudly received their award on the catwalk.
The Activjet nominated for the Herman Wijffels Innovation Prize

Together with our patron Dolphys and studioMOM, Panton developed the ActivJet on the basis of a good idea of anaesthetist Dietmar Enk. The Activjet is a an artificial ventilator by which even patients suffering from respiratory obstruction can be successfully treated.

The fire blanket Fixxeo which Panton designed for LifeSafetyProducts together with Kompane has been awarded a prize! Apart from the recognition GIO (Good Industrial Design) it was also selected - out of many entries - as the most original design. The fire blanket is launched on the market by Lifesafety products, and will shortly be for sale in the shops!

A view on the Future in de 'Rode Hoed'

Commissioned by Berenschot Panton made an animation of the five care models of the future 2018 which Berenschot had devised. The animation was the inspiring start of a panel discussion in the Rode Hoed in Amsterdam. Policy makers and board members of hospitals discussed the models.

The selection committee has nominated both new designs of Panton: SutureAid and PimpedbyRoos. SutureAid is the effective and safe forceps for surgeons designed with the studioMOM and the innovative company SutureAid. with Jaap Vis for Kompane and LifeSAfetyProducts, wellknown for its
LifeHammer. The design of the new fire blanket was focussed on user
friendlyness and safety. As you can expect from Panton.

The new home for Panton is now officially opened. After 3 lectures by
Isala Hospital, Philips Design and Panton, the mayor of Deventer
officially opened the characteristic building from 1634.

about pain for Erasmus MC
June 11th 2008
The Erasmus MC project "Know Your Pain" was nominated for the Dutch
University Award 2008. It's a project to inform people about pain and
medication and to obtain more data for research. Panton joined the
project and developed the website www.kenuwpijn.nl.
Finally Groningen University has won the award, but the motivated project
team will certainly continue the project.

Hobo on Durability Event 2008

organisations visited the yearly Event for durability. Iris Hobo
presented her vision on cradle to cradle and design for
durability in health care to 400 interested visitors. The

Lecture Design of Surgical Instruments
November 22nd 2007
Ingeborg Griffioen held a lecture during the first Congress of the
Dutch Association of Experts for Sterile Medical Devices. About 100
delegates listened to several lectures in the Medical Center of Radboud
University in Nijmegen. Ingeborg told designers how they could 'design
for sterilisation'. She also pointed out when and how sterilisation
experts and designers should communicate during the design process. Here

Panton developed a brainstorm poster to stimulate companies to develop
new ideas for healthcare. The poster was based on a roadmap study by
Ernst&Young for opportunities in the growing market for primary
health care. LIOF, BOM and Syntens started this initiative.
Medication safety
October 3rd 2007
Thom Verheggen had a training on medication safety in hospitals from
The Dutch Association of Hospital Pharmacies. Hospital Pharmacies are
ahead in improving patient safety by a.o. risk management and central
registration of medical errors. The idea that Panton has added value in
this area, was confirmed again.

Again, Panton opened her doors for its contacts. To rest,

Marc Padberg joins Panton
June 21st 2007
We are very happy with the fact that Marc
Padberg has joined Panton this month, as Product Design
Engineer. Marc (41) has developed many medical and rehabilitation
products at ao. Huka, Ideon and Demcon. Marc will focus on the
technology of new concepts, and its detailling and support of the
further development.
Design on the Fair
March 17th 2007
From the 14th untill the 16th of March, the 'Total Care Fair' took
place in Utrecht. Vilans asked Panton to create
solutions for problems in health care, together withs
students from Saxion College. Visitors of the fair were asked to submit
their problems or ideas before and during the fair. A creative team
immediately started with creating solutions in sketches. Together with
Vilans and Saxion, Panton will investigate which ideas deserve further
attention. Among others, Roos Prommenschenckel, mis(s) 2006/2007 reacted and asked
the creative team to find a solution for 'ugly crutches'. She was very
enthusiastic about the designs Iris created!
Henri in't Groen joins Panton
March 12th 2007
Henri in't Groen has joined the team of Panton as a consultant. Henri
has a background in Health Care, Health Science (Psychological Health)
and Education. He is currently active as Program Manager at the
Technical University in Eindhoven, Domain Health. Henri will combine
his job at the TU/e with contributions to Panton projects in the area
of education, psychology and health care.

have to know what that world looks like. That's why Panton is working
on a 'healthcare map'. Who is doing what, why, for who, what is the
connection, where does the money come from? The first version is on the
wall at Panton. We invite our relations to take a look at it and ask
them for suggestions and corrections on this map. And by navigating,
the world becomes more and more clear...

Patient safety

In exactly one year, all Dutch hospitals have to have a patient safety
management system. Panton is studying several initiatives on this
subject and the expected problems. Of course our goal is to contribute
to (userfriendly!) solutions.
Hand-over to Second Chamber

At Panton the Mayor of Deventer
officially presented the Report , with our proposals to
speed up the care & cure innovations and to get rid of
bureaucracy, to Second Chamber member Pieter Omtzigt. Members of the
Health & Care network, the government and the media were
present to witness this special moment. To demonstrate the potential of
our network and the contribution of the Report our client Glengowan
showed our development the Sutureaid forceps which prevent Needle Stick

Corneel doctor of medicine
September 29th, 2006
The papers are signed! Corneel finished his last internship
successfully and graduated at the University of Amsterdam. He's invited
to start working beginning next year in the hospital of Rotterdam
department of Child Surgery. Up until that moment he'll contribute full
time to our project.

This newspaper (Dutch Financial Times) has published an interview with Ingeborg. Together
with Pieter Omtzigt, member of The Second Chamber of our government,
Ingeborg has taken initiative to create a report together with many
parties in the medical field describing what laws are keeping both care
institutes and companies from creating, implementing or speeding up the
necessary improvements. The report

Griffioen family or not? The owner Bob Griffioen of this educational
museum opened its doors and give us a very inspirational tour through
the history of medical devices. Bob is a retired CEO of one of the
largest hospitals in Holland. We can recommend

Verheggen. Thom has over 10 years of experience in an industrial design
agency and 5 years management of product development at Royal Auping, a

Book market and Panton

In the medical field, many people love books. This was proven once
again when Panton opened its doors for its contacts during the national
Book Market held in Deventer. Great weather, our refreshments and tasty
soup contributed to the joy of our visitors who decided to take a break
at our office located in the old city centre next to the markets. It
appeared a good combination, so we'll do it again next year!

Corneel Honingh joined the team of Panton. Corneel is co-assistant and
wishes to specialise as a surgeon after he graduates in September.
Corneel provides us with more specific knowledge and helps us with the
